 New England Actuarial Seminars is sponsoring intensive preparatory courses for the Spring 2009 Actuarial examinations:

• Joint SOA Course FM / CAS Exam 2
• Joint SOA Course C / CAS Exam 4
• CAS Exam 3L plus Joint Exam 3F/MFE
• CAS Exams 5,7 and 8

The preparatory courses will be held in New Jersey and in the Chicago-O’Hare area.  Seminar participants receive:

• Extensive study aids
• NEAS recommended study schedules
• "Student Guides" to the more difficult readings
• Practice problems with model solutions
• Illustrative test questions and answers
• Study recommendations to optimize exam preparation.

NEAS seminars have been extremely successful.  The vast majority of new CAS Fellows in the past nine years have taken one or more NEAS seminars. Actuarial candidates are keen consumers who highly value our seminars and study material. Underlying the success of the seminars is the multi-faceted approach we take.

• Candidates receive comprehensive study material, giving them ample time to prepare for the classroom sessions. These materials cover past exam questions and practice problems with clear solutions and explanations of the relevant syllabus material. For this years’ exams, the NEAS practice problems, illustrative test questions, and students’ guides are invaluable aids to exam preparation.
• For difficult readings, such as options pricing on Exam 8, federal income taxes on Exam 7, asset share pricing on Exam 5, or the Panjer, Klugman, and Willmot text on Exams 3 and 4, NEAS re-writes the syllabus material with extensive examples and practice problems. The step-by-step guides to the pricing, valuation, and accounting readings on Exams 5, 7, and 8 optimize your exam preparation, giving you exact instructions for exam problems.
• NEAS seminar instructors are exceedingly well prepared.  They are experts in the subject matter, they have taught these courses many times in the past, they are familiar with the examination process, and they spend months every year preparing the material for the seminars. Candidates spend hundreds of hours preparing for the exams, and instructors should spend twice as much time preparing for the seminars.
• The classroom sessions are carefully structured, with outlines, slides, and problems. The seminars are closely tied to the exam material, never varying off course into irrelevant material. The NEAS seminars show candidates how to prepare effectively for the exams such as what exhibits to focus on, what items will be tested, and what formulas to memorize.

The examinations are difficult, the syllabus for many exams is overwhelming, and the competition becomes more severe each year. But with proper preparation – study aids, practice problems, effective instruction, and good study recommendations – candidates can shave years off the time spent to achieve Fellowship. Even the brightest and most serious candidates now find that it is becoming ever more difficult to achieve the 35-40% passing range without adequate preparation.

Seminars will be held in March-April 2009

~The New Jersey seminars will be held at the Woodbridge Hotel & Conference Center (formerly Sheraton Hotel at Woodbridge Place) in Iselin, NJ.

~The Chicago seminars will be held at the Crowne Plaza  in Rosemont, Illinois (near the O’Hare airport).

Students can register by mail, fax or online. Payment is by check or credit card. Cancellation of CAS Exam 2/SOA FM after study material has been mailed receive a credit of one half of the tuition applicable towards future NEAS seminars. Cancellation of all other NEAS  seminars will receive a credit for the tuition cost minus the cost of study material to be used towards future NEAS seminars.

For several of the seminars, NEAS expects more applicants than can be accommodated in the seminars. Applicants will be accepted on a first-come first-served basis. Applicants are advised to fax a copy of the application to the NEAS office to reserve a spot in the seminar.
