 Krzysztof   Ostaszewski

Dr.Krzysztof ("Kris") Ostaszewski, FSA, CFA, MAAA is a Professor of Mathematics and director of the Actuarial Science Program at Illinois State University .He has taught actuarial science at Illinois State University, Washington  University in St. Louis, University of Louisville, as well as internationally in Germany, Poland, Mexico and Thailand.  He was a Fulbright Research Fellow in actuarial science in 1995, and a Fulbright Senior Specialist in 2003-2004.  He is a member of the Society of Actuaries Finance Advisory Group, a long term faculty in the SOA Course 7 on Applied Modeling, and a former member of the Joint CAS/SOA Career Encouragement Committee, SOA Education and Research Council, SOA Social Security Committee, and AAA Social Insurance Committee. He is one of the co-authors and signatories of the Actuarial Standard of Practice No. 32 concerning social insurance..  

Dr. Ostaszewski has worked in asset-liability management and cash flow testing at Hartford Life and Providian Capital Management (now a part of Aegon USA), as well as in his consulting practice.  In the period 1996-1998 he was a Registered  Investment Advisor, managing  money for private clients.

 Dr. Ostaszewski’s publications include two research  monographs published  by the Society of Actuaries, two monographs published by the American Mathematical Society, a book on financial risk management for pension plans with Elsevier, and several other books.  His papers appeared in journals such as the American Economic Review, Journal of Business, North American Actuarial Journal,  Journal of Risk and Insurance, Proceedings of the Casualty Actuarial  Society, Proceedings of the American Mathematical Society. In 2004, he received the Hardigree Award for the best 2003 research paper in the Journal of Insurance Issues, and in 2005 he received the prestigious Mehr Award of the American Risk and Insurance Association for the research paper that best stood the test of time (together with Dr. Richard Derrig).  

Dr. Ostaszewski was a Fulbright Research Fellow in Poland in 1995,studying actuarial aspects of free market reforms. In 2003-2004 he was a Fulbright Senior Specialist, working on pension reform in Poland as well as connections between the monetary policy and retirement policies.  

Dr. Ostaszewski has assumed leadership of the Actuarial Program at Illinois State University in August 2000.Since then, this previously lesser known program has become a major force in academic actuarial science, with the total number of students close to 150, total annual number of examination successes nearing 100, and sharply increased external funding (including a major grant from National Science Foundation for scholarships for undergraduates, State Farm Scholars program for outstanding students, and several other new scholarships mostly funded by insurance firms). Dr. Ostaszewski leads intensive reviews for the first three actuarial examinations offered by Illinois State University, and is the author of the Course P study manual published by Actuarial Study Manuals.  

Dr. Ostaszewski has been a recipient of numerous research grants.
